Saturday at 2019 NYCC!
Saturday was a busy but fantastic day at 2019 NYCC!
My morning began with a round table press interview about the new Apple original series FOR ALL MANKIND (FAM).
Pressroom walls were decorated with images reflecting two alternative realties about the space race to the moon. One image recorded reality as we know it… the USA made it to the moon first.
The second image offered an alternative reality: what if Russians had reached the moon first?!!!
We interviewed Ron D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi, creators, writers and executive producers for FAM. Maril Davis, executive producer and several cast members also participated in the round table event.
During the interview, I ask Ron if he could discuss the origins of this alt reality show. Hope you enjoy his response and also comments from Maril.
Who, by the way, looks fabulous in red!
On Friday, I met with a young man named Alec Frazier, who contacted me via FaceBook expressing interest in my Outlander Anatomy blog and requesting an interview. (Apologies for slipping this into Saturday’s writeup, as I got the days confused).
Alec is a member of the Panel on People on the Spectrum of Autism Advisors at the Autism Society of American. He also owns his own own firm, Autistic Reality and gifted me with a copy of his published book, Veni! Vidi! Autism! A very accomplished young man!
We enjoyed a fruitful exchange wherein Alec asked many thought provoking questions about anatomy, medicine, disease and Outlander. He also asked my opinion about autistic and disabled people in arts and science. No problem, I support this! After he posts our podcast, I will add the link, here.
Alec is a member of Clan Frazier/Frasier and owner of its official Coat of Arms. At the NYCC, he will interview Diana Gabaldon!
Next, I rushed downstairs just in time to catch the Si-Fi Live Wire interview with Catriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, David Berry, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Duncan Lacroix. Enjoy their panel discussion!
Next, on my way to the Hammerstein Ballroom for an hour panel discussion and trailer FOR ALL MANKIND, I passed the amazing “Vessel” near the Hudson Yards. This is a walking structure designed for exercise in the city.
The FAM panel included Ron, Maril, Matt, Ben and cast members.
The FAM concept not only offers an alternative history for NASA’s moon program but here, women are vigorously trained as astronauts to prepare for a NASA moon shot!
Launch date for FAM is November 1, on 🍎TV+!
Moving on to Madison Square Garden for the Outlander Fan Panel in the Hulu theater, I was speaking in my usual robust voice with Ashley of Outlander TV News when I heard someone say, “I would recognize that voice anywhere!” I couldn’t believe it, but there stood Antoinette and Cathy who, along with Courtney Williams and I, do a four-person panel on Outlander Behind the Scenes! We actually had never met face-to-face but they recognized my voice on the busy streets of NYC! It IS a small world!
The Outlander Fan Panel was loads of fun. I enjoyed a wonderful view from reserve seating for press. The panel was moderated by GOOD MORNING AMERICA’s Ginger Zee who spent the first part playing games with attendees. You can read about Ginger, here!
First panelist to be introduced was, fittingly, Herself!
Diana was joined David, Maril, Cait, Ginger, Sam, Diana, Ron, Maria and Duncan. What a wonderful panel!
The panel was great fun, including a wee whiskey-drinking game. Here, Maria takes a cautious sip! Love her dress decorated with what appear to be Japanese cranes. 😍
My favorite part involved panelists being asked to speak a line from Outlander using a NYC accent. My fav was “Claire” shaking a finger at “Jamie!” 😂
Here it is!
Here are some fun comments by the panelists.
NOTE: The quotes attributed to Cait and Maria are switched in this Starz document.
One quick fun fact: We learned from Sam that S5 has Jamie and Claire making love without making love! Hum, I seem to recall that particular scene from The Fiery Cross ….. ! 🤔
More wonderful mages of the event can be found at this link!
Although we did not see episode 501, we did see the first season tease! View it here!
After the panel, a meet-up at the Algonquin Hotel for drinks and food. Sera-Lys McArthur (Johiehon) joined us! I told her she is stunningly beautiful. Duh!
Sera-Lys answered a question about her stunt double who climbed onto the burning pyre with Father Alexandre in Outlander episode 412, Providence.
Sera-Lys said it was difficult for everyone to watch – like us, they were astonished by the stuntwoman’s courage. She was enclosed in fireproof suit gelled-up and had to breathe through a straw! I do hope she was well compensated for her impressive skills. 💰💰💰
Home for a few hours of sleep, then up again!
Sunday at 2019 NYCC!
Back to the Javits Center to hang around until Penguin-random House booth opened for Diana’s signing. I tweeted my purchase of The Making of Outlander Seasons 1 & 2 and The Making of Outlander Seasons 3 & 4. And, got this quick response from Diana!
Gracious as always, Diana signed my books!
As did author, Tara Bennett!
Sera-Lys McArthur was nearby to autograph her page from The Making of Outlander Seasons 3 & 4. Thank you, Sera-Lys and KoKo of Outlandish Vancouver!
Back on the main floor for more cosplay!
Love the little children. They really get into the whole cosplay thing!
Another wee one!
He, He! So cute!
A beautiful red gown!
Maori warriors!!!
Lest you think ComicCon is only about comic books and cosplay, booths contain a wide variety of items for purchase and collection. Action figures!
Books!
The Best Books!
Funny authors and much, much more!
Leaving Javits, I subway-ed it back to my hotel to freshen up for a night out, Courtesy of Courtney Williams! She ordered a private car, drinks at a fabulous cellar bar and dinner at a farm-to-table restaurant. Everything was delicious and I over-ate big time. As you can see, we were giddy by evening’s end! Thank you, Miss Courtney!
Stepping into the dark, the Empire State Building loomed in the distance!
Back to the hotel for 4 hours of sleep and then back home. I had a wonderful time at 2019 NYCC. Hope to see you there next year!
The deeply grateful

I enjoyed your recap Karmen! You had one busy weekend! 😘
Hi, Courtney! Thanks for reading. I did have a very busy weekend, as did you. Such fun to get together!
Hugs!
Excellent recap. It was great meeting and hanging out with you.
Vida! So happy to hear from you. Delightful to share drinks with you at the Algonquin! Hope to see you again in the near future.

Brilliant, thanks Karmen! You certainly packed a lot in to two days 🙂
Thanks so for reading, Julie. Those two days were the busiest of the four ComicCon days! I even missed a few things I wanted to see because so much going on!

Great post Karen! Just one thing, are you sure you didn’t swicht the quotes of Caitriona and Maria. At least I think the quote you wrote as Maria was, in Fact, Caitriona’s, but I might be mistaken. Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing your experiences with all of us, so we can taste how it was to be there. 😍.
Hi Laura. Thanks for the input. I will check the post to see if I need to correct the quotes. I was sleep deprived when I wrote it, so certainly could have made an error. 😉
OA
Hi laura. I checked the post. I wonder if you refer to the “notable quotes” section? If yes, those were actually taken from a Starz email to me written by Danielle Villaluna, summarizing the evening. It is possible that she transposed the two quotes but as I didn’t record the panel or write the quotes, I can neither confirm or deny. 🙂
Karen I checked it and it’s switched. You can watch the whole panel in Outlander page in Facebook. Caitriona says ‘when you live your live to the fullest… ‘ and Maria that this love lasts forever. I’ll tweet you the records of the panel because IDK how to do it here. Thanks again for the post. It has been great to follow your experiences through the NYCC
Thanks, Laura. I will let Danielle know that the comments are switched. There is nothing I can do about it except comment in my blog as I did a screen shot of what she wrote.
Just so much fun to read your comments and learn of your observations. What a most delightful and interesting person! I would love to meet you someday. Thank you ~ S
Hi Sandy. My, I am blushing! Thank you so much for reading my blog and taking time to comment. I hope to meet you someday, too!
