levator labii superioris alae·que na·si \ ləˈvātər/ ’lei-bi.ai/ su,piər.i’or.is/-ā-ˈlē-kwē-ˈnā-ˌzī\

noun, Latin meaning lifter of the upper lip and wing (ala) of the nose

Anatomy Def: muscle of facial expression that flares the nostril and lifts the upper lip

Outlander Def: An sexy wee muscle that flares Jamie’s nostrils when he’s waited long enuf – no more stalling clever Claire!

Learn about levator labii superioris alaeque nasi (LLSAN), a tiny muscle with the longest name of any, in Anatomy Lesson #11: Jamie’s Face or Ye Do It Face to Face? Also known as the Elvis muscle, it snarls the lip and flares the nostrils. A mnemonic to remember its name is: “Little Ladies Snore All Night.

Read about Jamie’s nose in Outlander book:

He regarded me for a moment, rubbing his nose, which was beginning to redden. “Well, I might take that several ways, Sassenach, but under the circumstances,” he said, “thank you.” “I should thank you,” I said, “for marrying me. I must say that I’d rather be here than in Fort William.” “I thank ye for the compliment, lady,” he said.

See Jamie’s nostrils flare in Starz episode 107, The Wedding (and in episode 101, too). Yes, it’s his LLSAN at work!

Fun Fact – incisors

incisors

Anatomy def: a sharp-edged tooth at the front of the mouth, adapted for cutting; four incisors in each jaw.

Outlander def: front eight teeth (four on top, four on bottom) used for threatening, nipping, biting, ripping!

Learn about the incisors and all the other teeth in Anatomy Lesson #14, Jamie and Claire of The Anatomy of a Kiss!

Read about Jamie’s beautiful, teeth in the Outlander book:

His features were indistinct, but the moonlight caught the gleam of teeth as he grinned. “Well then, since ye don’t want me to hurt myself, I suppose that means as you’re comin’ with me?”

And…

He reached out for one of the long-bladed grasses and pulled it smoothly from its sheath… Square white teeth crunched down on the grass stem.

Read about the effect of the standing stones on Claire’s teeth in Outlander book:

The sounds were all around me, making my teeth ache and my head spin. My vision began to blur. I do not know now whether I went toward the cleft in the main stone, or whether it was accidental, a blind drifting through the fog of noise.

View Angus’ missing incisors as he threatens a Redcoat in Starz episode 105, Rent!

And…

See Claire bare her teeth at BJR in Starz episode 106, The Garrison Commander!

And…

Watch Jamie’s incisors, erm, pay homage to Claire in Starz episode 109, The Reckoning!

Fun Fact – sternum

angus-sternum

Anatomy def: A flat compound (three fused parts) bone in the ventral midline of the thorax; it articulates with ribs and clavicles. Also called the breastbone.

Outlander def: a delightful midline bone making a wonderful pillow between pectoralis major muscles.

Learn about the sternum and its three parts (manubrium, gladiolus, xiphoid process) in Anatomy Lesson #15: Crouching Grants – Hidden Dagger.

Read about the breastbone (sternum) in Outlander book where Rupert teaches Claire how to kill with a sgian dubh:

“Now, here,” he said, pointing to the center, just under the breastbone, “is the spot to aim for, if ye’re killin’ face to face. Aim straight up and in, as hard as ye can. That’ll go into the heart, and it kills wi’in a minute or two. The only problem is to avoid the breastbone; it goes down lower than ye think, and if ye get yer knife stuck in that soft bit on the tip, it will hardly harm yer victim at all, but ye’ll be wi’out a knife, and he’ll ha’ you.

Watch Professor Angus teach Claire how to kill an opponent by stabbing a sgian dubh under the ribs and to the side of the breastbone in Starz, episode 108, Both Sides Now. See Jamie’s breastbone in Starz episode 109, The Reckoning…and weel, pretty much every other episode, too! He does manage to frequently oblige us with views of his sternum! We are verra grateful and just in time for Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to those who celebrate this holiday…gobble gobble!

A deeply grateful,

Outlander Anatomist
